This trip combines the spectacular experience of visiting a glacier and hiking up a barren mountain. It is a nice hike for those who have some trekking experience and want to learn about glaciers. The glaciers we go walking on do not constitute any high or dangerous risks for our participants, but sometimes we use crampons or snowshoes, depending on the season of the year.
We follow the Larsglacier up to 500 meters above sea level and climb to the summit of Sarkofagen Mountain, were we have lunch. At this lookout point we have a magnificent view of two grand glaciers, the city of Longyearbyen and the deep blue sea itself. From this point, you also have a spectacular view of the coal seams and the geology of the steep, jagged mountains. The slope down to the next glacier, have soft layers of black sand and this makes it easy to hike downhill.
At the end of the glacier trek, we walk through a moraine with 60 million year old fossils. You may even take a few fossils with you as souvenirs.
